On 1 September 2025, the 14th UNESCO/IOC Regional Training and Research Center on Ocean Dynamics and Climate (ODC Center) Training Course convened in Qingdao. Hosted by the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) ,  Ministry of Natural Resources, this year’s program focuses on the Application of Ocean Forecast System, continuing its mission to strengthen global capacity in Ocean Forecast.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Fangli Qiao, Director of the ODC Center. Representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, the ODC Center, FIO, and Elsevier attended and addressed the event. Speakers highlighted the essential role of the ocean in climate change, acknowledged the ODC Center's decade-long contribution to international cooperation and capacity building in ocean-climate research, and encouraged trainees to actively engage in academic exchange.

The first day featured lectures on key topics such as “Publishing Trends and Contributions in Oceanography from Early Career Researchers” and “New-Generation Ocean-Climate Coupled Models and Their Applications”, offering insights into ocean modelling and data assimilation. An interactive group discussion on research proposals further facilitated the exchange of ideas.

Over the next two weeks, the course will combine expert lectures, hands-on exercises, Q&A sessions, and discussions. World-renowned scientists will lead training in core areas including ocean dynamics and air-sea interactions. Approximately 35 participants from 18 countries will deepen their expertise, contributing to the advancement of international marine research.

As this two-week learning journey proceeds, participants are expected to gain valuable knowledge and build professional networks, contributing to global efforts in tackling ocean and climate challenges. The ODC Center remains committed to fostering international scientific cooperation through training and education.
